Brackett, Ph.D. Director, Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence; Professor, Child Study Center, Yale School of Medicine; CASEL Board of Directors Topic Description: How we define American values and empower and educate our children to embody those values are critical evergreen questions with even greater urgency in 2019. Our speakers will discuss the role SEL has in sustaining the vibrancy and integrity of our democracy in a climate of division and how education could be harnessed to promote a sea change in our citizenry and society. Exploring the value of civil discourse and the responsibilities of citizenship and their connection to SEL will be topics of this important conversation among national leaders with diverse perspectives. Speakers will name possible pitfalls, describe successful examples, and acknowledge young people who are already leading the way.
