Breakout Sessions 14 | S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 Day 1 - Thursday, October 3, 2019 Morning Session 10:10am - 11:20am Beyond the Bells: Integrating SEL and Academics to Advance Equity Through Out-Of-School Time Programs Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus area: Research Topic: Out-of-school time and community-based partnerships Intentional program design and execution is essential to meaningful impact— especially when using SEL skill-building in out-of-school time programs to address academic and classroom challenges. This interactive session will put you in the shoes of both a program designer and a youth participant in an SEL-informed out-of-school time program. Experience how infusing thoughtful, age-appropriate SEL skill-building into out-of-school time programs helps students overcome obstacles to academic learning, then explore what training is critical to equip program staff to work with a variety of challenging youth behaviors, support kids in overcoming obstacles to learning, and provide a high-quality, impactful, SEL-infused afterschool program. Creating Daily Opportunities to Build Equitable, Safe, and Supportive Schools Through Creative Expression Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus area: Research Topic: Advancing equity Harness the power of social and emotional learning through creative expression to transform your school or district into an equitable, safe, and supportive learning environment for all. Learn how to create sustainable change using trauma-informed and culturally sensitive practices from Dr. David Osher, American Institutes for Research vice president. During this experiential session, participants will engage in a series of creative exercises rooted in theories from positive psychology and expressive arts therapy led by Move This World’s founder and CEO, Sara LaHayne. Participants will walk away with strategies in order to strengthen the emotional well-being of themselves and their students. Embedding Social and Emotional Learning in Secondary Classrooms Session focus area: Practice Topic: Integrating SEL and academics What does authentic, comprehensive integration of SEL competencies look like in the secondary classroom? In this dynamic and interactive session, unpack a classroom “snapshot” of how a teacher naturally embeds social and emotional learning competencies into an academic lesson. Explore a set of Learning and Life Competencies (LLCs) for Secondary School, College, and Career Success that seamlessly integrates into five classroom learning domains: positive personal relationships; organizing the learning environment; content design, learning tasks, and protocols; academic support; and restorative and accountable discipline. LLCs encompass four social-emotional skill sets: self-awareness, self-management, and social and academic efficacy, and include specific target behaviors. Learn and experience evidenced-based strategies to cultivate these LLCs (e.g., self- regulation, cooperation, organizing to learn) in ways that are academically relevant, developmentally informed, and culturally responsive.
