Breakout Sessions 16 | S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 Day 1 - Thursday, October 3, 2019 Morning Session 10:10am - 11:20am Permission to Feel: Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus areas: Research, Communication Topic: Advancing equity Emotions matter. They inform our thinking and decisions, the quality of our relationships, our physical and mental health, and our creativity and everyday performance. In this presentation, international SEL expert Marc Brackett will discuss the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence’s research on the “emotional state” of our nation’s children and adults; describe an updated theory of emotional intelligence, including how emotional intelligence benefits people’s lives; and provide an overview of RULER, an evidence-based, systemic approach to embedding the principles, skills, and practices of social and emotional learning into schools and districts around the globe. Participants also will learn practical tools to develop emotional intelligence to achieve greater personal and professional success. Rural Social Emotional Learning Implementation: An Approach Between Union, District, and Leadership to Create Collaboration, Integration, and Coherence Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus area: Communication Topic: Aligning related approaches and fields For a growing number of schools and districts, Schoolwide SEL has become a coordinating framework for how educators, families, and communities partner to promote students’ SEL. CASEL and the Consortium for Educational Change (CEC) have partnered to support schools and districts with their implementation of SEL and to build, sustain, and continuously improve implementation. Learn about how the Central Illinois Network Partnership for Schoolwide SEL has engaged rural districts and union efforts to build coherence toward systematic implementation of SEL. This session will highlight a rural district’s SEL implementation journey to access expert CASEL/CEC support through building a regional network. Social and Emotional Learning Skills in the Sex Education Classroom Session focus area: Practice Topic: Aligning related approaches and fields Teaching social and emotional learning (SEL) skills in the context of comprehensive sex education is a key component to supporting student learning. SEL is a foundation of the evidence-based sex education curriculum Get Real: Comprehensive Sex Education That Works, which utilizes SEL skills to help students navigate relationships, practice effective communication and decision-making, serve as a primary prevention for sexual assault and harassment, and build empathy for others. This workshop will engage attendees in small- and large-group discussions, activities, and a lecture, as well as introduce messaging from Get Real. Participants will leave with concrete tips and strategies to implement SEL skills in their sex education classrooms, along with best practices in being intentional, trauma-informed, and inclusive in their teaching.
