Breakout Sessions S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 | 17 Day 1 - Thursday, October 3, 2019 Morning Session 10:10am - 11:20am Supporting Students and Staff in the Aftermath of Crisis and Loss Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus areas: Policy, Communication Topic: Crisis and loss School and community crises can cause short- and long-term effects on psychological functioning, emotional adjustment, health, and developmental trajectories of students. Educators can promote students’ understanding of the event, help accelerate adjustment, minimize distress, and reduce maladaptive coping mechanisms and behavioral difficulties. Practical suggestions on how to identify common adjustment difficulties and promote effective coping strategies will be drawn from more than 30 years’ experience responding to school and community crisis events. Participant questions will be addressed and examples of accommodations that promote optimal learning during the recovery period will be offered. Free resources from the National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement and the Coalition to Support Grieving Students will be highlighted. The Play’s the Thing! Developmental Use of Theater Games for Social and Emotional Growth Session focus area: Practice Topic: Out-of-school time and community-based partnerships Participants in this fun, interactive workshop will learn drama therapy theory, group dynamic understanding, and developmental learning principles in order to walk away with concrete and replicable theater games and facilitation tools aimed at student engagement, social and emotional skill-building, and increased positive classroom/school climate. By balancing structure and student developmental skill level, participants will learn how to adjust games for high-level engagement and skill-building. Participants will learn empowering exercises, strength-based vocabulary, and engaging theater games through hands-on participation, detailed explanation, and targeted small-group skills practice that they can take home and use immediately in their classrooms. Skills learned in this session are appropriate for all educators, mental health professionals, para- professionals, principals, and any attendees working with youth. The Role of Mindful Awareness Practices (MAPs) in Implementing Social and Emotional Learning With an Equity Lens Session focus area: Practice Topic: Innovations in evidence-based practices, Mindfulness There is a growing body of nascent research and practice that supports the value of integrating Mindful Awareness Practices (MAPs) into a systemic approach to implementing social and emotional learning with an equity lens. Through engaging pedagogy including small-group discussion, contemplative practice, and individual reflection, this session explores the “value add” MAPs can serve in creating the inner foundation needed to build an equity consciousness as well as deepen social and emotional competencies in both adults and children.
