2019 SEL Exchange Program (Online Version)
Breakout Sessions 18 | S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 Day 1 - Thursday, October 3, 2019 Morning Session 10:10am - 11:20am Where Research Meets Practice: Meeting the Needs of the Whole Child in Secondary Schools Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus area: Research Topic: Innovations in evidence-based practices This session features two case study presentations that illustrate how secondary schools support whole child development in ethnically and socioeconomically diverse populations. The framework for these case studies is aligned with research on the Science of Learning and Development, which draws from diverse fields including neuroscience, epigenetics, and developmental psychology, to underscore how contexts shape children’s development and corresponding principles for practice to advance equity in education. Speakers will provide useful guidance for secondary schools seeking to nurture whole child development, including social and emotional learning, and promote equitable outcomes for all students. How Do We Scale Evidence-Based Programs and Practices With Quality?: A Roundtable Discussion Session focus area: Research Secondary focus area: Practice Topic: Effectiveness of programs While small-scale studies of programs and practices provide the evidence base for SEL, schools and other organizations now want to scale their use with efficiency. This roundtable focuses on how the field can maintain quality and child social, emotional, cognitive, and academic outcomes when “going to scale.” This roundtable follows from the 11 briefs created by Penn State for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that have reviewed the research/practice base for SEL. Participants in the roundtable will be challenged with a number of real-life scenarios faced by school districts and community agencies in deciding how, with what timetable, and with what resources it is possible to “go to scale” while maintaining quality. A key issue that will be discussed is how local schools and districts can develop and maintain the expertise necessary to implement programs and practice with quality and sustain the use of evidence-based programs and practices over time. Integrated Framework for Addressing Socio-Emotional, Identity, Resilience, and Cognitive Development: Race, Ethnicity, Gender, and SES Through the Lens of Culture Session focus area: Research Secondary focus areas: Practice, Policy Topic: Advancing equity This symposium offers a framework for integrating socio-emotional, identity, and cognitive development supporting wholistic resilience among minoritized youth living in poverty. These foundational developmental dimensions unfold together. Thus learning environments must address them in tandem with supports stretching across ecological settings (family, school, community, peer social networks), with supports coordinated and responsive to basic human as well as unique challenges with which youth must wrestle and learn to productively resist. Constructions of race, ethnicity, gender, class, and ability are foundational to how systems support positive youth development. National expert presenters will offer practical illustrations of educational programs taking up these principles in diverse settings, addressing the multiple dimensions of youth development, not isolated to socioeconomic status. Studies that will be discussed take place across diverse settings from schools to districts, including diverse ethnic populations, addressing the needs of youth and adults.
