Breakout Sessions S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 | 19 Day 1 - Thursday, October 3, 2019 Morning Session 10:10am - 11:20am Integrating Social and Emotional Learning into Teacher Preparation: Current Practices, Future Directions, and Lingering Questions Session focus area: Research Secondary focus areas: Practice, Policy Topic: Integrating SEL into educator preparation programs A growing body of evidence has documented how students’ academic and life success are bolstered when attention is given to promoting their social and emotional learning (SEL). Yet, little is known about the degree to which pre-service teacher education programs incorporate SEL into coursework. In this interactive session, a panel of experts will discuss the current research, policies, programs, and strategies for integrating SEL into teacher preparation. Examples of existing programs, policies, and research in the US and Canada will be summarized and directions for future work on integrating SEL into teacher preparation will be discussed. Research Topic Cluster: Innovations in Measurement and Personalized Technology Session focus area: Research Secondary focus area: Practice Topic: Innovations in evidence-based practices This session focuses on the vanguard of measurement of SEL with youth and the potential of personal technology in SEL programming. Eva Oberle presents new data from middle school students and their teachers in British Columbia. Students report on their own SEL as well the SEL context of their classroom, and this is linked with data on teacher’s own commitment to SEL and their own well-being. Jessica Trach presents data on the new Middle Years Instrument that is a strengths-based, population- level, self-report measure that assesses the social-emotional assets of 4th- and 7th-grade students across multiple contexts: home, school, and community. The presentation will provide examples of how schools use this data for curriculum planning. Melissa DeRosier will discuss core design characteristics for creating effective personalized learning SEL technologies. She will present examples of how game-based virtual simulations can be scripted to provide tailored social problem-solving opportunities to students’ real-world social situations. The presentation will broadly focus on the promise of personalized technologies for SEL. Join a discussion on what these groundbreaking efforts tell us about student self-report tools and personalized technology in our evolving field.
