Weikart Center for Youth Program for Quaility, an affiliate of the Forum for Youth Investment Continuous Improvement in the Development and Use of Social-Emotional Learning Measures: Lessons from Large-Scale Survey Administration in the CORE Districts Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus areas: Research, Communication Topic: Assessment Since 2014-15, the eight CORE districts, representing over one million students in California, have administered self-report SEL surveys to students in grades 4-12. In this session, participants will 1) learn about CORE’s SEL survey and the emerging evidence of its reliability and validity; 2) understand approaches to continuous improvement in SEL measurement over time, 3) discover how practitioners in the CORE districts use measures of students’ social-emotional learning to improve schools, and 4) design ways to display data that provide the right information at the right time to prompt action for people in various roles. This session is suited for stakeholders in a variety of roles, including teachers, counselors, principals, central office staff, and parents. Creating Seamless SEL Experiences for Young People Between In- and Out-of-School Time Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus areas: Communication, Policy Topic: Out-of-school time and community-based partnerships In this moderated panel discussion featuring leaders from Dallas, Palm Beach County, and Tulsa, participants will learn how school districts and community-based organizations have collaborated to build a shared vision, vocabulary, and set of learning practices to facilitate SEL and a supportive, equitable climate. After hearing from the panelists, participants will have an opportunity to share best practices and collaboratively explore solutions to problems from their own work across the school day and out-of-school time settings. Exploring the Common Ingredients of Continuous Quality Improvement Systems to Improve Social and Emotional Learning Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus areas: Research, Policy Topic: Continuous quality improvement This session explores the key considerations and components for continuous quality improvement (CQI) systems that improve young people’s experiences both in school and during out-of-school time (OST) settings. As school districts and OST systems begin to work collaboratively on SEL, a focus on continuous quality improvement provides an opportunity to ensure alignment of adult practices across settings and contexts. The session will identify five key elements of the CQI system and provide examples of these elements in practice across different settings. Building from research on CQI, participants will discuss how to build and implement aligned CQI practices in their community.
