Breakout Sessions S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 | 23 Day 1 - Thursday, October 3, 2019 Mid-Day Session 11:35am - 12:45pm Harnessing the Power of Action Civics and Youth Voice to Support SEL and Academic Goals in the High School and Middle School Classroom Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus area: Research Topic: Student voice and activism This workshop will focus on Mikva Challenge’s action civics public speaking initiative—Project Soapbox—that has been implemented for the past eight years in Chicago and in six other cities. The workshop will start with a dive into recent research on what students learn from Project Soapbox and the role of teachers in facilitating student learning, and then move on to a practical and interactive “how-to session” for educators to implement Project Soapbox around the upcoming presidential election. The presentation will be led by adult and youth Mikva leaders and include curricula, videos, and other helpful materials aimed at middle school and high school classrooms. Hearing Our Stories: Ethnic Identity and SEL Competency Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus area: Communication Topic: Advancing equity Ethnic identity is particularly important to students who are marginalized and victims of discrimination, microaggressions, and other similar negative attacks on their ethnicity. Using children’s books, movie clips, and other media, participants are invited to hear and share stories about their ethnic identity development and that of their students. Participants will look at how ethnic identity informs the ability to develop SEL skills and how SEL skills help create a positive ethnic identity. Finally, participants will leave with a reading list and at least one lesson that relates to the teaching of ethnic identity in an SEL class. Integrating SEL into Leading and Coaching Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus area: Research Topic: Educational leadership Stress takes a big toll on learning, classroom climate, teacher engagement, and resilience. The stress response can escalate conflict, damage relationships, and make it difficult for inspired teaching and engaging learning to happen. By integrating SEL within staff meetings, professional development sessions, and coaching conversations, leaders and coaches support teachers in cultivating their own social-emotional skills and demonstrate ways to integrate social and emotional learning within the context of everyday instruction. The result? Students and teachers build their social, emotional, and cognitive competencies as well as the character traits, attitudes, and mindsets that enable deep learning to happen. In this workshop, participants will explore design principles and tools for taking action in their schools and districts.
