Participants will leave able to identify key strategies needed by building principals to transform school culture at elementary and secondary levels. Racial Equity in Our Schools: SEL Is Necessary, But Not Sufficient Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus area: Research Topic: Advancing equity Racial inequity is a pernicious problem in American schools. The current political moment has made it even more essential that educators have skills and awareness they need to protect and nurture all of our young people. In this interactive workshop, based on decades of intensive work with New York City public schools, participants will be provided with concrete, tested, and tangible strategies for having important conversations about race with peers and with students. Using micro labs and circles, the workshop will give participants an immersive experience in using SEL skills in a restorative setting that will enable courageous conversation about race in their contexts. Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus areas: Research, Policy Topic: Out-of-school time and community-based partnerships Are you ready to implement intentional social and emotional learning (SEL) practices in your out-of-school time (OST) program?
