Breakout Sessions 26 | S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 Day 1 - Thursday, October 3, 2019 Mid-Day Session 11:35am - 12:45pm The CASEL Guide to Schoolwide SEL: A Process for Implementing SEL Systemically Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus areas: Communication, Research Topic: Schoolwide SEL implementation High-quality schoolwide SEL implementation creates an environment that infuses SEL into every aspect of students’ educational experiences and promotes equitable outcomes for all students. This session will engage participants in a process for implementing schoolwide SEL systemically, effectively, and sustainably. Participants will engage with the CASEL Guide for Schoolwide SEL and hear from leaders from the El Paso Independent School District in Texas who have used this framework to drive high-quality school implementation. Participants will focus on the indicators of Schoolwide SEL and four focus areas for high-quality implementation: 1) Build foundational support and plan, 2) Strengthen adult SEL competencies and capacity, 3) Promote SEL for students, and 4) Practice continuous improvement. Building the Assessments We Need: The Development of New Actionable SEL Data-Points for Teachers Session focus area: Research Secondary focus area: Practice Topic: Assesssment There is an urgency to assess SEL well among researchers, practitioners, and policymakers alike. This session presents emerging evidence from four new lines of inquiry being conducted at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence in the research-to-practice space-applied investigations systematically drawing from science and practice to build the data points teachers need to improve practice and demonstrate student growth. Specifically, we target teacher emotional well-being, student emotion regulation across the academic lifespan, school climate in secondary school, and SEL accessibility for diverse learners. These projects are all in the test development and initial validation stage, and this session is as an opportunity to engage richly to co-construct meaning through taking pieces of assessments, reflect through guided discourse, and engage in the assessment development experience together. Research Topic: Cluster: Culture and Context for SEL Impact Session focus area: Research Secondary focus area: Practice Topic: Innovations in evidence-based practices Learn about three cutting-edge studies focused on how culture and context can influence SEL development and outcomes both immediately and with longitudinal perspectives. Jennifer Rosales presents an in-depth look at how a local community organization in Washington, D.C., implemented SEL programs in the city’s middle and high schools. The presentation focuses on how SEL can be integrated with the culture of each school. Holly Jacobs presents findings on SEL outcomes of the Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools (UCS) program, which brings students with and without intellectual disability together to socially interact. Jennifer Bailey presents findings 17-24 years after students participated in SEL programs and how it may influence their own children’s outcomes. Bailey focused on the outcomes for the next generation of children from participants in the Raising Healthy Children and Seattle Social Development Programs. Discussion focuses on the long-term potential of SEL interventions to impact the next generation.
