SEL and Future Economic Returns for Students and Society Session focus area: Research Secondary focus area: Practice Topic: Economic value of SEL One of the main reasons that schools focus on test scores for accountability in learning is that there is a widespread belief that future economic status of both students and society will depend upon the retention of test-based achievement. However, in the last two decades, considerable evidence has emerged that social and emotional learning outcomes can explain occupational success and income based on skills that may be substantially independent of test results. The purpose of this panel is to provide insights into these results and the research that explores them, and set directions for future explorations for assessing SEL’s economic returns. What Happens When Practitioners and Researchers Build Authentic Relationships: Design-Based Research and Tackling SEL Implementation Obstacles Session focus area: Research Secondary focus area: Practice Topic: Research-Practice partnerships This session will introduce the Research-Practice Partnership paradigm that CASEL is employing and also model it with participants through an interactive working session. Participants will engage in a problem-of-practice protocol guided by expert, district-based researchers, and practitioners. This session will illuminate the successes and learnings of this approach in the field through exploring the specifics of the partnership between CASEL and Minneapolis Public Schools and between Chicago Public Schools and the University of Michigan.
