2019 SEL Exchange Program (Online Version)
Breakout Sessions 28 | S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 Day 1 - Thursday, October 3, 2019 Afternoon Session 3:20pm - 4:30pm Taking the Measure of SEL Assessment: The Current State of the Field and a Vision for its Future Session focus area: Communication Secondary focus areas: Practice, Research, Policy Topic: Assessment Researchers, parents, educators, and policymakers increasingly recognize that social and emotional learning skills are critical for success in school and life. As a result, state policies and evidence-based SEL programs have been widely adopted. In contrast, less attention has been paid to and progress made on developing usable, feasible, and scalable tools for educators to assess children’s SEL skill. Just as educators use high-quality student academic assessment data to support teaching and learning, so can high- quality student SEL skill assessment data be used for formative assessment, program evaluation, progress monitoring, continuous improvements, and other goals. This session will offer a summary of a State of the Field report, an outgrowth of a multi-disciplinary Assessment Work Group. The report’s lead author will describe where the field of SEL assessment has come to and also articulate a vision for its future. Join the ensuing discussion with experts representing research, practice, and policy perspectives to explore the role of SEL assessment in advancing teaching and learning. Talking About Equity and SEL: Community Context, Values, and Communications Session focus area: Communication Topic: Advancing equity Providing equitable opportunities for developing young people’s social, emotional, and academic growth is challenging enough; talking about it can be even harder. Equity can mean different things to different people, and depending where you live, terms like “social and emotional learning” may be embraced or shunned. In this facilitated conversation, engage with expert presenters and other participants to consider different frames for equity and SEL as you discuss your own community needs. Find specific strategies that will work for your context through exploring a suite of SEL-focused communications tools that explicitly and implicitly reference equity and the organization or district goal to provide equitable outcomes. Sewing SEL Into the Fabric of State and Federal Policy: Promising Strategies and Potential Pitfalls Session focus area: Policy Topic: SEL policy and advocacy on state and federal levels Through this interactive session, participants will learn and practice skills and strategies to increase their effectiveness as SEL advocates within their home states. Not to be confused with a basic advocacy 101 session, here session leaders will walk through real-life case studies on passing SEL policy that highlights triumphs and pitfalls of state-based advocacy. The session will also provide attendees with a brief overview of the current state and federal policy landscape on SEL, while giving the chance to discuss and reflect on their own advocacy work.
