2019 SEL Exchange Program (Online Version)
Breakout Sessions 30 | S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 Day 1 - Thursday, October 3, 2019 Afternoon Session 3:20pm - 4:30pm Combating Racism and Inequity in Schools: The Role of Adult SEL Competency Session focus area: Practice Topic: Advancing equity Participate in this session to examine the impact of racism and inequity on students’ opportunities to thrive in school. Research confirms that black and brown students are negatively impacted by adult attitudes and behaviors, as well as systems and structures that produce inequities in classrooms and buildings. Engage with colleagues in a world café to reflect on the critical role of adult SEL competence in creating equity in school communities. Understand the importance of modeling the five core SEL competencies for students and families and learn how shifting attitudes and behaviors toward students facilitates the positive relationship-building that is critical to their success. Cultivating Emotional Well-Being in Educators: Challenging Our Thoughts and Beliefs About Our Emotions Session focus area: Practice Topic: Promoting adult SEL You leave school feeling angry—and a little ashamed. One of your students criticized you in class, and you brushed off her comments, not knowing how to respond. “I’m actually a terrible teacher,” you say to yourself as you head to the car. Then your brain unleashes a string of negative thoughts. And you feel worse. Emotions are reactions to life events—whether those “events” occur internally or externally. Research indicates that people’s thoughts and emotions are deeply intertwined, and their beliefs about emotional expression are profoundly influenced by their values and cultural backgrounds. To better navigate emotions, it’s important to understand how beliefs can influence feelings and behaviors. In this session, participants will 1) identify their beliefs about emotions, 2) analyze how those beliefs might influence their daily interactions, and 3) practice using a research-based technique called “cognitive reappraisal” (shifting an interpretation of an event) to navigate challenging emotions. Cultivating Healing School Communities Session focus area: Practice Topic: Promoting adult SEL During this workshop, research and experiential knowledge about the practices that support students’ healing, build their resilience, and foster compassion in the classroom will be explored. Participants will learn about the effects of trauma on body and mind and how to recognize them in students’ behavior. Trauma-sensitive practices will be presented. Participants will learn to connect the dots between mindfulness, compassion, and resilience. Guided by three national experts, educators and leaders will explore easy-to-use, practical activities to hone the skills needed to cultivate self-compassion and to create a compassionate learning environment.
