Breakout Sessions S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 | 33 Day 1 - Thursday, October 3, 2019 Afternoon Session 3:20pm - 4:30pm Straight Talk From the Front Lines: Immersive Implementation of SEL Increases Engagement and Academic Performance of At-Risk Students Session focus area: Practice Topic: Student voice and activism Culture is king. When schools and classrooms are genuinely designed to prioritize culture and relationships, all students, irrespective of race, gender, economic status or history of past failures in school, can thrive academically. This student-led session will offer a unique examination of the impact of specific school design structures and practices that significantly improve student engagement, conduct, and academic performance. This “straight talk” will enable participants to hear what works from the perspective of students and discuss specific strategies for how to structure schools and classrooms. Participants will leave inspired and equipped to implement change on Monday. Students Have the Solutions! Are We Ready to Hear Them? Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus area: Research Topic: Student voice and activism In this session, participants will learn about efforts by Washoe County School District (WCSD) to empower students of all ages and backgrounds with the data, tools, and social and emotional competencies they need to be leaders of school change. Attendees will hear from WCSD students about what student voice means and looks like, and together we will describe WCSD’s efforts to engage students in meaningful conversations about improving our educational systems. Come prepared to ask (and help us answer) the hard questions about how to promote equity through student voice and address the challenges of getting students to speak…and adults to listen.
