Breakout Sessions 36 | S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 Day 2 - Friday, October 4, 2019 Morning Session 10:00am - 11:10am The Great Lakes State Engages Great Stake(holders) Around SEL Session focus area: Communication Secondary focus area: Practice Topic: Stakeholder input and buy-in (statewide) Michigan has embraced SEL across the state and in many facets of education: from Early Childhood initiatives to K-12 implementation and now into the Higher Education arena. Support for SEL is strong and widespread across the state. State education associations, business organizations, and legislators as well as districts have demonstrated a commitment to SEL. Attend this interactive and dynamic session and learn how stakeholders from all those perspectives were engaged, offered input, and gained a sense of commitment to statewide SEL. All attendees will leave with proven engagement ideas and communication resources to put to work in their state. Tools and Resources to Help Communicate Effectively About SEL Session focus area: Communication Topic: Effective communication approaches This interactive session will introduce participants to the high-quality, free communications tools developed by CASEL and its key collaborators, including the Aspen Institute, Edutopia, and Learning Heroes. Tools will include survey research on messaging; customizable PowerPoints, press releases, and op-eds; videos; animations; communications plans; and advice for dealing with opposition. Led by a CASEL communications consultant in partnership with district-based leader, participants will leave with a toolbox of helpful resources and expert insights. Bringing Coherence to District and State Collaboration Session focus area: Policy Topic: Educational leadership To create a successful SEL initiative, it is critical that multiple layers of the education system support and enhance one another, ensuring that states and districts partner, work, and learn together to ensure equitable learning environments for all students. In this session, state and district teams from Rhode Island and Wisconsin, discuss ways in which they support and enhance the work of each other. Led by CASEL practice and policy experts, participants will explore resources that states and districts have used to train teachers and develop students while reflecting on using such resources in their specific contexts.
