Breakout Sessions S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 | 37 Day 2 - Friday, October 4, 2019 Morning Session 10:00am - 11:10am What Brain Science Says: How Scientific Breakthroughs Can Improve Policy to Ensure SEL, Equity, and Excellence for All Students Session focus area: Policy Topic: Advancing What could education look like if it was intentionally designed around what we know from science about how children learn and develop? It would be informed by knowledge of the developing brain, designed to achieve equity and enable all youth to thrive. It would also ensure that relationships, experiences, social and emotional learning, cultural competence, and expert instruction valued the identity and abilities of children to unleash their full potential. Join experts from the Science of Learning and Development Initiative to explore how recent groundbreaking scientific discoveries can inform the policy conditions to support SEL and equity for all students. Participants will collaborate in groups and receive tools and resources that will enable them to take their learning back to their local contexts and do the work of designing practical policy solutions rooted in science. Advancing equity and SEL Through Developmental Relationships Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus areas: Research, Policy, Communication Topic: Aligning related approaches and fields Both practitioners and researchers know that when young people experience strong relationships with caring adults, it enhances their learning and development in many different ways, including the acquisition of essential social and emotional competencies and skills. Join Search Institute and City Year to explore their ongoing, innovative research-practice collaboration through which they are prototyping and testing practical resources for relationship development as part of City Year’s evidence-based approach to supporting the whole child. The collaboration is part of Search Institute’s larger Relationships for Outcomes Initiative (ROI). This session includes fun, interactive activities and will equip attendees to develop learning experiences anchored in developmental relationships that accelerate SEL. Building Partnerships in Support of Where, When, and How Learning Happens Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus area: Communication Topic: Out-of-school time and community-based partnerships We need to expand our understanding of where and when learning happens—or doesn’t happen—pushing beyond the in-school/out-of-school dichotomy to consider the many places and spaces that can and should contribute to learning and development. Participants will explore what youth development organizations and intermediaries can and do to partner with schools and districts to support social, emotional, and cognitive development across a young person’s day and year, using a new framework and recommendations developed by the Aspen Institute’s National Commission and Social, Emotional, and Academic Development. In this interactive session, participants will use the report’s recommendations to inform ways they can deepen their partnership practice and promote equity.
