Breakout Sessions 38 | S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 Day 2 - Friday, October 4, 2019 Morning Session 10:00am - 11:10am But I’m Not a Social Worker! An SEL Practices Coaching Tool for Classroom Teachers Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus area: Communication Topic: Innovations in evidence-based practices “I’m not a social worker” and “I never learned this in grad school” are common refrains among teachers faced with taking on SEL. They may agree it is a good idea but feel at a loss for how to do it. This session will share an SEL practices observation tool and associated practice-based coaching model that helps teachers understand evidence-based SEL practices, build confidence, and practice new skills. Participants will learn about the importance of SEL practices in the classroom, have a chance to practice using the tool, and explore the implementation of a coaching model in a rural school in western New York. Elevating the Voice of Those We Are Called to Serve— System Design With Youth Engagement and Voice Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus areas: Policy, Communication Topic: Student voice and activism Calling adults and youth! Come dig into how student engagement and voice can be a sustained part of school/district improvement through a multi-tiered system of support. Let’s learn from each other how to authentically engage the voices of our students to address needs of both students and adults in your school or youth program. Join a rousing dialogue while providing your feedback on the Iowa youth-adult partnership processes and tools focused on positively impacting the learning climate. We’ll share our blueprint for working with students to analyze data and problem-solve to address the social-emotional-behavioral-mental wellness needs for students and adults. If I Knew Then What I Know Now: Learning About Systemic SEL from CASEL’s Collaborating Districts Initiative (CDI) Partners Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus areas: Research, Policy, Communication Topic: Implementation science Join this interactive panel discussion with CASEL staff and district partners to learn about pathways towards systemic implementation of SEL. CASEL will share the evolution of their District Level Theory of Action for systemic SEL gleaned through the Collaborating Districts Initiative (CDI) as district leaders offer their reflections on building and sustaining districtwide SEL implementation. We will hear about both the successes and the pitfalls of district’s implementation over time. Participants will gain access to resources to help self-assess the status of their own district SEL implementation and plan for next steps.
