Breakout Sessions 40 | S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 Day 2 - Friday, October 4, 2019 Morning Session 10:00am - 11:10am The How, When, and Why of Student-Led SEL in Secondary Schools: Building Skills and Creating Community Session focus area: Practice Topic: Student voice and activism Research tell us there is a reciprocal relationship between student engagement and school climate. In this session, a panel of students will present on how they took leadership roles in the SEL process at their schools. After a brief introduction to student-led SEL, the panel will cover why and how they became involved in SEL, the impact they had on their schools, and the personal benefits they have experienced. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask the panel questions to explore the roles that students can play in enhancing school climate and supporting the social- emotional growth of their peers. The SEL Integration Process Through Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment: A Schoolwide Approach Session focus area: Practice Secondary focus area: Research Topic: Integrating SEL and academics Current SEL implementation in schools often includes curricula or programs that supplement current academic content rather than integrate SEL into the context of curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Presenters will share and explore the evolution of the SEL integration process at Adlai E. Stevenson High School, including building teacher SEL knowledge and efficacy to create authentic evidence-based assessment and grading. This session will highlight the intersections of research, theory, and practice based on the CASEL competencies as part of a practical teaching and learning framework that can be implemented in the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Using Walkthrough Tools to Advance SEL Implementation, Alignment, and Equitable Practices Session focus area: Practice Topic: Implementation science Nashville’s school and classroom walkthrough process, rubric, and support structure have been fine-tuned to provide rich, actionable data and feedback to Nashville schools. Nashville has entered into a partnership with SEL leaders in Washington, DC, and Denver to adapt and scale up this work for use in their districts, with a focus on practices that promote SEL, equity, and alignment with out-of-school time programs. The three districts will share what they have learned and produced through this partnership and will provide recommended timelines and samples for participants to build from.
