2019 SEL Exchange Program (Online Version)

Breakout Sessions S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 | 41 Day 2 - Friday, October 4, 2019 Morning Session 10:00am - 11:10am From Sweating the Small Stuff to Scaling Up: SEL Assessment Now and in the Future Session focus area: Research Secondary focus area: Practice, Policy Topic: Assessment Increasingly, schools leverage SEL data—frequently gleaned from surveys and questionnaires—to make evidence-based decisions. In-between deciding upon specific questionnaire wording to finally deciding which policy to enact lay many steps. Thus, in trying to translate data into practice, school leaders face numerous potential pitfalls along the way. This session engages participants in 1) key decisions (and potential hazards) in designing SEL assessments, 2) determining how high-quality data can produce savvy evidence-based decision-making at scale, and 3) the intrinsic trade-offs that remain in even today’s best systems and exploring how future assessment approaches might overcome these limitations. Learnings Around SEL and Equity From the Field Session focus area: Research Secondary focus area: Practice Topic: Advancing equity Social and emotional learning (SEL) has the potential to help mitigate the interrelated legacies of racial and class oppression in the U.S. and globally. Currently, that potential is under-realized. In this session, CASEL practice and research leaders and district partners will share an elaboration of CASEL’s core SEL competencies to reflect issues of equity, highlight how districts across the country are developing practices to support SEL and equity, and discuss programs and practices that educators can use to leverage SEL in service of equity. Measuring the Development of Social And Emotional Learning Skills: Findings From a District-Research Partnership Session focus area: Research Secondary focus area: Practice Topic: Advancing equity This session examines how understanding the longitudinal development of social and emotional learning (SEL) skills in elementary and middle school can provide insights into achievement gaps and whether students are on track for high school graduation. By highlighting research findings from a district-research partnership between Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD), a member of the California Office to Reform Education (CORE) Districts Initiative, and NWEA, an assessment nonprofit, presenters will candidly discuss how districts and researchers can come together to address pressing questions around how to best support students’ social-emotional development. Participants will collaborate with presenters and each other to generate guiding principles on how to deepen SEL-based research-practice partnerships.
