2019 SEL Exchange Program (Online Version)
Breakout Sessions 42 | S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 Day 2 - Friday, October 4, 2019 Morning Session 10:00am - 11:10am Research Challenges and Opportunities in Mindfulness and Compassion Programs With Children and Youth: A Roundtable Discussion Session focus area: Research Topic: Effectiveness of programs Mindfulness programs and practices for children have quickly grown popular in schools. Yet, because they are relatively new compared to other types of SEL programs, they have less carefully documented research support. For example, most studies have small sample sizes, relatively weak experimental designs, and little data to show that the effects (if obtained) are sustained across time. This panel of experts (that includes practitioners, researchers, and developers) will discuss the current challenges and opportunities that face this research— including design, intervention models, issues in implementation and the study of sustained use and outcomes. This roundtable will include active participatory learning in a number of ways: participants will experience mindfulness and contemplative practices at the elementary and secondary level and engage in critical discussion with the expert panelists. Research Topic Cluster: Exploring SEL Program Outcomes Session focus area: Research Secondary focus areas: Practice Topic: Innovations in evidence-based practices This set of presentations provides new randomized trial data on three school-based SEL programs conducted in the U.S. and the U.K. Neil Humphrey presents findings of a large study of the PATHS Curriculum in the U.K. Sara Rimm-Kaufman presents outcomes of Connect Science that integrates STEM with SEL. Josh Brown presents on a large study of the 4Rs curriculum, integrating SEL and academics. Join for an expert-led discussion on these important studies and the implications for future research on the effectiveness of SEL programming. Research Topic Cluster: Teacher Perspectives and SEL Session focus area: Research Secondary focus area: Practice Topic: Innovations in evidence-based practices In the U.S. and Europe, teachers are leading the charge to implement high-quality SEL. This series of presentations, delivered by national and international experts, will focus on teachers’ perspectives and behaviors related to this work. Laura Hamilton presents on findings from the American Teachers Panel focusing on teacher beliefs about SEL and Equity. Sanela Talić presents on the effectiveness of a Toolkit of SEL teaching practices used with teachers in seven European countries as part of an Erasmus Project. Kate Zinsser presents observational data on a new measure of how teachers teach emotions in the early years. The presentation will provide evidence of the EMOTERS observational system and will include exemplar video aligned with high-quality practices. Presenters will engage in discussion with participants around what the data tells us and what comes next to continue to explore a teacher’s relationship with SEL implementation.
