2019 SEL Exchange Program (Online Version)
Breakout Sessions S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 | 43 Day 2 - Friday, October 4, 2019 Morning Session 10:00am - 11:10am The Chicago Schoolwide SEL Study: Testing the Efficacy of the CASEL Guide to Schoolwide SEL, Version 2014 Session focus area: Research Secondary focus area: Practice Topic: Innovations in evidence-based practices The 2014 CASEL Guide to Schoolwide SEL was a resource that included tools, coaching, and guidelines for teams of school leaders to implement systemic SEL and to support the implementation of evidence-based SEL programs. This implementation support system was tested in a randomized clinical trial conducted by the American Institutes of Research and Penn State University in partnership with CASEL. The study was conducted over three years in 28 schools in grades K-3 in a large urban school district. This session will present an overview of the CASEL School Guide and the findings from this trial. Learnings from this study informed the development of the revised CASEL Guide for Schoolwide SEL released online in 2019. The Evidence Base for SEL: Current Status and Future Directions Session focus area: Research Secondary focus areas: Practice, Policy Topic: Effectiveness of programs Scholars hypothesize that SEL programming has immediate and longer-term benefits for young people, both in school and later life. However, educators and policymakers may wonder whether researchers have documented the effectiveness of SEL programs. To answer this question, we’ve examined four large-scale meta-analyses on student outcomes related to participating in school-based SEL programs. Existing evidence strongly suggests that SEL has significant benefits for participating students. Although these reviews indicate several benefits, there are still many research and practice questions to address. In this session, national experts will highlight those questions and lead participants in a discussion about the future of SEL program research. Resilient Mindful Learner: Cultivating Teachers’ Well- Being with Stress Management and Mindfulness Session focus area: Practice Topic: Promoting adult SEL Teaching is one of the most stressful occupations, as a recent Gallop Poll confirmed, with 46% of teachers reporting high daily stress during the school year. Not only does high stress affect teacher health, job performance, retention rates, and job satisfaction, but research tells us it is linked to student academic and social and emotional outcomes. This experiential session will present current research on teacher stress, the ethical mandate of self-care, and the impact of mindfulness on educators. Participants will understand the need to support teachers’ health and social and emotional competence while exploring a TK-12 training program developed in response to this need: The Resilient Mindful Learner Project, funded by the California Mental Health Services Authority through the Orange County Health Care Agency.
