Breakout Sessions 44 | S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 Day 2 - Friday, October 4, 2019 Mid-Day Session 11:25am - 12:35pm Communicating “How Learning Happens”: Turning Research into Practice Session focus area: Communication Secondary focus area: Research Topic: Effective communication approaches Parents and educators are essential to supporting young people’s social, emotional, and academic development. But how do they talk and think about learning and the skills and competencies that help our young people grow? This question prompted the National Commission on Social, Emotional, and Academic Development and Learning Heroes to collaborate on the development of a suite of communication resources for educators and others who work closely with youth and their families. Learn about the research that informed the development of these tools, get insights from three communities that have piloted the tools with various audiences, and explore how you can use and adapt these program-agnostic resources to support your goals and effectively communicate about the social, emotional, and academic aspects of learning. Parent Engagement and Beyond: Building a Learning Neighborhood for Community Support of Children’s Social-Emotional Learning Session focus area: Communication Secondary focus area: Practice Topic: Parenting The Learning Neighborhood is a joint collaboration between the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and Committee for Children. Designed to build communities of care around the social-emotional development of children, the program also supports the practice of early childhood educators in a variety of care environments. In this session, we will explore solutions for combining digital and analog solutions to increase parent engagement, and discuss how to build collaborations between educators, parents, and informal caregivers concerning the theme of SEL. Bringing SEL to State Policy: A Conversation With State Education Agency SEL Leaders Session focus area: Policy Secondary focus area: Practice Topic: Aligning related approaches and fields As members of CASEL’s Collaborating States Initiative (CSI), state teams will discuss ways in which their efforts are leveraging state policy to promote student social and emotional development, as well as ways they have engaged stakeholders throughout the process. Panelists will share products their teams have developed (including learning standards or competencies, guidance, and professional learning). These state SEL leaders will share their respective visions for how their policy efforts may transform the ways students in their state are educated, including the ways in which their team’s policy work is designed to encourage and support evidence-based, equity- focused SEL in districts, schools, and classrooms. Panelists include leaders from Indiana, Massachusetts, and Minnesota.
