2019 SEL Exchange Program (Online Version)

Breakout Sessions 50 | S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 Day 2 - Friday, October 4, 2019 Mid-Day Session 11:25am - 12:35pm Optimizing Implementation of SEL Programming in Schools: Focus on Coaching and Integration Session focus area: Research Secondary focus area: Practice Topic: Implementation science Despite the increased use of SEL programs, there has been less consideration of the types of supports that are needed to optimize their implementation in schools and classrooms. This session identifies various implementation supports (e.g., professional development, coaching, integration with other frameworks) that should be considered when implementing SEL programs. Particular attention will be paid in the workshop to research-based approaches to coaching, data-based decision- making, fidelity monitoring, and integration with PBIS and other multi-tiered frameworks. Three experts will translate implementation research findings to practice with the goal of helping audience members implement SEL programs with high fidelity. Research Topic Cluster: International SEL Frameworks and Interventions: Perspectives from India, Israel and Mexico Session focus area: Research Secondary focus area: Practice Topic: Innovations in evidence-based practices Engage with leading international SEL researchers and explore exciting new studies done outside the U.S. in this series of presentations. Leandro Chernicoff will present on the work of AtentaMente in Mexico. This organization has developed Educating in Balance (EB), a whole school, skill-based SEL intervention for principals, teachers, and students. The presentation will focus on how EB has been used with over 3000 teachers and findings in its initial impact. Daphne Kopelman Rubin will present findings on a randomized trial of a new Israeli-developed program, I Can Succeed for Preschoolers (ICS-PS). ICS-PS is implemented as part of the regular curriculum using stories, physical activity, and games. Maya Menon will present findings from a study of The Teacher Foundation in India. This study collected data throughout India that has resulted in the development of ISELF, an age-banded Indian Social and Emotional Learning Framework for Grades 1 to 12. The presentation will also discuss how ISELF is similar to and different from the CASEL Framework. Research-Based Strategies for Taking SEL to Scale Session focus area: Research Secondary focus areas: Practice, Policy Topic: Promoting adult SEL This session will focus on research-based strategies for making social and emotional learning broadly accessible and effective in routine practice. Geared for education leaders working at all levels, this workshop will progress through five different processes for taking SEL to scale: 1) building coalitions, 2) articulating principles, 3) conducting assessments, 4) selecting and implementing interventions, and 5) striving for continuous improvement. Participants will discuss incorporating these research-based strategies into social and emotional learning initiatives locally and nationally, illuminating opportunities and challenges, and building collaborative solutions for continuous improvement.
