2019 SEL Exchange Program (Online Version)

S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 | 59 Practice Demo Sessions All Demo Sessions will take place in the SEL Town Hall in the Great Lakes Ballroom . Getting Beyond Happy, Sad, and Mad: Building Emotional Literacy Through Storybook Reading This demo session will focus on using storybooks to teach emotional language skills to young children. Building children’s social-emotional competencies while reading can support development in the oral language and social-emotional domains, areas critical to school success. Through video and interactive experiences, participants will engage in active learning and leave with clear strategies for highly effective storybook reading that builds children’s ability to name, recognize, and understand emotions.  Harnessing the Power of Children’s Literature for Academic and Social Emotional Growth With a heightened focus at the national, state, and district level on social and emotional learning, it is becoming increasingly important to equip educators with the knowledge and tools to integrate academic and social learning through their literacy block. This session will help educators better understand 1) how children’s literature can be expertly used to build classroom community and 2) assist students in connecting with literature as a way to cope with life’s challenges, learn empathy, and inspire students to be change makers. Forum for Well-Being, a Professional Development Tool to Help Educators Embody and Support SEL Skills for Themselves and Their Students Participate in Millennium.org’s Forum for Well-Being innovative circle process designed to strengthen mindful social and emotional learning capacities and cultivate greater educator well-being in an environment of shared trust and individual accountability. This session offers participants a taste of Forum, shares a proposed model of change to improve educator well-being, and discusses ongoing research efforts to measure its impact on educators. Resetting Staff and Students: Shifting the Culture by Changing How We Talk about Kids Participants will experience a working intervention center from the moment a student who feels triggered arrives through cool-down and problem-solving coaching session. The adult coach will help the student de-escalate and create an intervention plan for success with similar situations that the student may encounter in the future. In addition, participants will see how Wendler Middle School teachers and administrators have improved the overall school culture by changing the way adults interact with each other and students. The history of ASD SEL practices and policy will be explored as well as how both contributed to the current multi-tiered web of support model. From Research to Engagement and Play: Research- Based Approaches for Developing Social-Emotional Skills Outside of the Classroom Research tells us that the development of social-emotional skills outside of the classroom, whether on the playground or in afterschool programs, has great merit. Join Playworks and WINGS for Kids, two evidence-based programs that focus on fun, play-focused SEL programming.  Participants will experience best practices for implementing SEL strategies outside of the classroom and leave with tools and resources that positively impact students and school climate.
