60 | S OCIAL & E MOTIONAL L EARNING EXCHANGE 2019 Practice Demo Sessions All Demo Sessions will take place in the SEL Town Hall in the Great Lakes Ballroom. Making the Implicit Explicit: Exploring the Intersection Between Art and SEL within Classroom Contexts Examine the hypothesis, research model, and positive outcomes of our work as a four-year Menninger Clinic Bridge Up Magic Grant recipient. We will share our tested and true model to enhance SEL learning through theatre arts practices implemented within core-subject classrooms. Imagine a self-aware student willingly using ‘Actor’s Focus,’ three deep breaths, when infuriated by a classmate as he tries to learn fractions. This is only one implicit arts practice made ‘SEL explicit strategy’ within K-8 arts integration core-subject classrooms. Join us! Explore the power of A+SEL integrated lessons. SEL and Restorative Practices: How an Innovative Approach to Using Talking Pieces in Circles Has Transformed Two Elementary Schools This session will engage participants in various Restorative Practice Circles that utilize innovative talking pieces to understand how they can be used with teachers, students, and parents. Speakers will explore how the use of circles aligned with the CASEL Core Competencies has transformed two elementary school communities by reducing behavior referrals and improving school culture. Additionally, presenters will describe how they’ve shifted to communities where relationships are prioritized by empowering students and teachers to have open dialogue focused on repairing harm. BAM and WOW Programs: Evidence-Based Models That Improve Education and Life Outcomes for Young Adults of Color Youth Guidance (YG) partners with educators and school leaders to implement school-based programs that provide the social and emotional support to youth from under-resourced communities to overcome significant obstacles and ultimately succeed in school and in life. When life outside the classroom is wrought with violence, poverty, and instability, students often struggle to focus at school. With programs like WOW (Working on Womanhood) and BAM (Becoming a Man), YG is working to restore the potential of adolescents during a critical developmental period of life. Youth Guidance will lead an engaging, informative, and interactive demonstration of our signature evidence-based programs, BAM and WOW. Democratizing Access to Social Emotional Learning Through the Power of Technology and Partnerships This demo session will explore several social and emotional learning (SEL) focused Discovery Education partnership programs built collaboratively with educators, academic experts and both the public and private sectors. With the advancement of equity and access to quality SEL across the education landscape as a primary focus, we’ll learn how to use technology to effectively scale these SEL experiences. Participants will innovate together in an engaging, multi-modal environment that supports meaningful adult learning thought provoking activities and small-group conversations that connect to CASEL’s five core SEL competencies and SEL teaching and learning strategies.
