8 | AUDITORIUM THEATRE 2019-20 | March 10 - May 5, 2020 On March 10, National Geographic explorers Tim Laman and Cheryl Knott come to the Auditorium for National Geographic Live Speaker Series event Adventures Among Orangutans! Orangutans are solitary animals that live in hard-to-reach places, making them one of the most difficult land animals to study. Knott, a biological anthropologist, and Laman, a photojournalist, have spent more than 25 years researching these incredible, mysterious animals with whom we share 97% of our DNA. Did you know... • The word “orangutan” comes from the Malay and Indonesian words “orang” (person) and “hutan” (forest) — so the name means “person of the forest”! • Orangutans can live up to 30-40 years in the wild, and 50-60 years in captivity. • Orangutans have opposable thumbs, just like humans — and they have opposable big toes, too! • You can only see orangutans in the wild in two places — the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Previously, it was thought that there were only two species of orangutan: the Bornean orangutan and All About Orangutans! TIM LAMAN TIM LAMAN
