March 10 - May 5, 2020 | AUDITORIUM THEATRE 2019-20 | 9 the Sumatran orangutan. The third species, the Tapanuli orangutan, wasn’t discovered until 2017 (but these orangutans also live in Sumatra)! • According to the World Wildlife Fund, there are approximately 104,700 Bornean orangutans; 13,846 Sumatran orangutans; and just 800 Tapanuli orangutans on the planet. The Bornean orangutan is an endangered species, while Tapanuli and Sumatran orangutans are considered critically endangered. Deforestation and hunting are severe threats to the orangutan population. • Most great apes like to live in groups, but not orangutans — they prefer to be alone or with their offspring only! • Orangutans’ arms stretch wider than their bodies — some large male orangutans can have a wingspan of up to 8 feet! • Baby orangutans are carried around by their mothers for five years or more. • Orangutans are the largest tree-dwelling animals on the planet — adults spend more than 90 percent of their time hanging out in treetops. They sleep in leafy nests so that predators (like big cats) can’t reach them. • Orangutans are omnivores! Their diets consist mainly of fruit, which they find up in the trees (that’s also where they find water, collected on leaves), but they also eat nuts, bark, plants, and the occasional ant, termite, or bird egg.
