ALDREDGE Lighting by TOSHIRO OGAWA Production Coordinator: DINA MAKAROVA Solor, despondent and depressed by Nikiya’s death, hallucinates and conjures a vision of the dead Nikiya. She appears in the Kingdom of the Shades, and her vision is multiplied by the corps de ballet. Seeing her, Solor remembers the dance of love by the Sacred Fire, which took place in the first act. The Kingdom of the Shades was first staged for American Ballet Theatre by Natalia Makarova in 1974. It premiered on July 3 of that year, danced by Cynthia Gregory as Nikiya and Ivan Nagy as Solor. Makarova subsequently produced and choreographed the full-length, three-act version of La Bayadère for American Ballet Theatre, which premiered on May 21, 1980 with Natalia Makarova as Nikiya, Anthony Dowell as Solor, and Cynthia Harvey as Gamzatti. INTERMISSION Jardin aux Lilas (Lilac Garden) Choreography by ANTONY TUDOR Staged by AMANDA McKERROW and JOHN GARDNER Music by ERNEST CHAUSSON (“Poème”) Scenery and Costumes designed by PETER CAZALET Caroline, about to enter upon a marriage of convenience, attends a farewell party to precede the ceremony. Among the guests are the man she really loves and the woman who, unknown to her, has been her fiancé’s mistress. Quick meetings and interrupted confidences culminate with Caroline leaving on the arm of her betrothed, never having satisfied the desperate longing for the final kiss. Jardin aux Lilas was first performed by Ballet Rambert on January 26, 1936 at the Mercury Theatre in London, England, and entered the repertoire of American Ballet Theatre on January 15, 1940 at the Center Theatre, New York City. Deuce Coupe was given its world premiere in 1973 by The Joffrey Ballet and Twyla Tharp Dance at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, IL. It received its American Ballet Theatre Company Premiere on May 30, 2019 at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York.
