DEEPLY ROOTED DANCE THEATER/VISCERAL DANCE CHICAGO/ATE9 DANCE COMPANY | NOVEMBER 16, 2018 | 7 ATE9 DANCE COMPANY About Ate9 Dance Company Ate9 fosters new and promising artists who are committed to a journey of research to master the craft of dance. Artistic Director Danielle Agami creates an array of work that explores the juxtaposition of subtlety and extreme physicality to evoke intimacy and awe. Her work is accessible in its honesty and creates interest for audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Ate9’s repertory is built upon the desire to engage newcomers and fans. Ate9 believes it is essential to allow public access in the studio, in class, and in dialogue to discover the joy and knowledge that dance can bring to everyone. With this goal in mind, Agami and the Ate9 dancers also dedicate time and effort to bring dance to the public education system, creating a meaningful meeting between young audiences and contemporary art. Ate9 continues to blaze a trail in Los Angeles with productions that are innovative, visceral, interactive, and accessible to the diverse communities around Los Angeles and the world. Danielle Agami (Choreographer, Artistic Director) Danielle Agami was born in Israel in 1984, where she studied at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance High School and was a member of the Batsheva Dance Company under the direction of Ohad Naharin. Between 2007 and 2009, Agami served as the Artistic Director of Batsheva Dancers Create, and she functioned as the company's rehearsal director from 2008-2010. After eight years with Batsheva, Agami moved to New York to serve as the Senior Manager of Gaga USA. In 2012, Agami relocated to Seattle, where she founded Ate9 — an undertaking that has fully realized her artistic voice as a dancer, choreographer, and teacher. Agami was the grand prize winner of the 2013 and 2014 Annual Choreography Festival at the McCallum Theatre and was featured in Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” in 2015. In 2016, she was recognized with the Princess Grace Award for Choreography. That same year, she created a new work, Pick a Chair, with Visceral Dance Chicago. Agami has created over eight complete works with Ate9 during its five-year history, in addition to her multiple commissions throughout the Los Angeles community, including projects with the LA Philharmonic, The Music Center, CAP UCLA, The Industry Opera, LA Dance Project, and The Krupnick Festival. Agami was recently awarded the 2018 Virginia B. Toulmin Fellowship for Women Choreographers at New York University, where she developed a solo work and researched a new ballet class that mixes traditional forms with knowledge from her years of practicing and teaching Gaga Movement Language. Glenn Kotche (Composer, Percussionist) For a percussionist and composer as energetic, inquisitive, and versatile as Glenn Kotche, it’s his sense of balance — his ability to thrive in different and seemingly disparate worlds — that really makes him stand out as a musician. Since 2001, Kotche has been the rhythmic anchor in the band Wilco. He has appeared on over 80 recordings by artists as diverse as Andrew Bird, Edith Frost, Neil Finn, and Radiohead's Phil Selway, and he is a founding member of two other bands — Loose Fur, with Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy and longtime collaborator Jim O’Rourke, and On Fillmore, with upright bassist Darin Gray. He has also written music for classical and post-classical ensembles like Kronos Quartet, the Silk Road Ensemble, the Bang on a Can All-Stars, So Percussion, eighth blackbird, and many more. ATE9 DANCE COMPANY DANCERS Sarah Butler , originally from the Bay Area, received her early dance training at the Marin Ballet School and graduated with a BFA in dance from Cornish College of the Arts. Butler teaches open classes through Ate9 in Los Angeles and recently staged Danielle Agami’s Vickie on students of Cornish College of the Arts. Rebecah Goldstone is from Santa Fe, NM, where she trained and performed for many years with Moving People Dance Santa Fe under the direction of Ronn Stewart and Layla Amis. In 2012, she received her BFA from the Boston Conservatory. Goldstone has been with Ate9 since its inception in 2012 and is a certified Gaga teacher under the umbrella of Ate9.
