For more information, visit AuditoriumTheatre.org. Answer key: 1) A: Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler were the two architects behind the Auditorium Theatre’s creation. Adler served as the engineer — he’s the one responsible for the theatre’s perfect acoustics! — while Sullivan was integral to the theatre’s design. 2) C: Louis Sullivan himself wrote the poetry found on the theatre’s proscenium mural and under the two paintings on either side of the theatre. The lines come from his poem “Inspiration.” 3) D: Theodore Roosevelt gave his famous “ Armageddon ” speech at the Auditorium in 1912. Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Hillary Clinton both appeared here in 2017. The theatre was closed to the public during John F. Kennedy’s presidential tenure, and he never made any o›cial appearances at the theatre. 4) B: The theatre’s stage area was used as a bowling alley for soldiers visiting the Servicemen’s Center. 5) D: Although all of the bands mentioned have performed at the Auditorium, it was Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young that made their first-ever appearance here on August 16, 1969. They mentioned on stage that they were headed to something called “Woodstock” the next day, but they weren’t quite sure what that was. The band also broke up at the Auditorium — after a show in July 1970, when Crosby, Nash, and Young decided to fire Stephen Stills. He was reinstated two days later, and the band performed one more time, but they broke up for good after that. During World War II, the Auditorium Theatre was used as a Servicemen's Center for traveling soldiers, complete with a bowling alley Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young AuditoriumTheatre.org 77 E Adams St RussianTeaTime.com 65 E Adams St TesoriChicago.com 10 N Dearborn St TrattoriaTen.com 17 E Monroe St LockwoodRestaurant.com 124 S Wabash Ave PottersChicago.com 11 N Michigan Ave ParkGrillChicago.com AUDITORIUM THEATRE 2018–19 SEASON HOTEL + RESTAURANT PARTNERS 638 S Michigan Ave MercatChicago.com 70 W Madison St StockandLedger.com 17 E Monroe St PalmerHouseHiltonHotel.com Russian Tea Time 10 N Dearborn St SopraŽna.com
