Auditorium Theatre 2018-19 Issue 2 Hubbard Street Dance
6 | AUDITORIUM THEATRE 2018-19 | January 19 - March 3, 2019 Don't miss Too Hot to Handel at the Auditorium Theatre on January 19 and 20, 2019. Too Hot to Handel: Beyond the Stage Every year since 2006, the Auditorium Theatre has presented Too Hot to Handel: The Jazz- Gospel Messiah, a joyous, uplifting performance that commemorates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life and his vision of a "beloved community" — a world without poverty, bigotry, and violence. The shows bring people from all across the city together to celebrate with soloists Rodrick Dixon, Alfreda Burke, and Karen Marie Richardson; legendary Detroit pianist Alvin Waddles; a huge volunteer choir directed by Bill Fraher, director of concert choirs at Chicago’s Old St. Patrick’s Church; and a chamber orchestra and jazz band conducted by Michigan Opera Theatre’s assistant music director Suzanne Mallare Acton. But Too Hot ’s reach extends beyond the weekend performances. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Jaiden Bestman, Poetry Contest winner from 2017, at the Auditorium Theatre with his mother before the performance. Student work from the Too Hot in-school residencies.
