Inspired by Cerqua Rivera cofounder and Artistic Director Wilfredo Rivera’s own personal journey, the four-part piece moves through themes of dislocation, assimilation, renewal, and hope. ENSEMBLE ESPAÑOL SPANISH DANCE THEATER Ecos De España (Echoes of Spain) The inexhaustible vitality and distinctly individual qualities of Spanish folk music, with all its rhythms and colors, have fascinated composers in Europe and worldwide throughout the 20 th century. Ensemble Espanol founder Dame Libby Komaiko was inspired by paintings from Francisco de Goya’s “Black Period” and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s musical creations. The celebrated Russian composer and music teacher Rimsky-Korsakov is famous for his popular symphonic suites and imaginative blend of orchestral sounds. Dancers: Company Music: Capriccio Espagnol , Op. 34, Scene y Cante Gitano (fourth movement), and Fandango Asturiano (fifth movement) by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) Deshojando Flores (Stripping Petals) The theme of this work is inspired by the corrida de toros (running of the bulls), portrayed in the dance style known as zapateado (dance of the shoe).
