Auditorium Theatre 2019-2020 Celebrate Sondheim
September 21 - November 16, 2019 | AUDITORIUM THEATRE 2019-20 | 9 Get Out with the Chicago Sinfonietta takes place at the Auditorium Theatre on September 21, 2019 at 7:30PM. AUD: Is there ever a time that you’re trying to trick the audience? Is the music meant to make them feel a little more comfortable than they should be feeling? MA: I wouldn’t say “trick.” It’s about what the main character is feeling. It was very important to Jordan that we be able to understand what Chris is feeling at all times, because you have to understand why he does what he does. He’s not crazy, he’s trying to have a good weekend with his girlfriend, meet the parents, and not freak out! The music is always coming from Chris’ perspective to help the audience understand what he’s going through. AUD: Have you conducted the score for Get Out in front of a live orchestra before? What was that like? MA: Yes! I got to do it at the Kennedy Center with the National Symphony Orchestra. It’s like skydiving. It’s a complete rush and it challenges you at every emotional level. You’re working with these wonderful musicians, and the music for the film is all about timing. It’s all got to be live, there are no re-dos, and it’s got to be right on. It’s conducting in a way that’s kind of like an Olympic sport. AUD: You’ve spent some time in Chicago before. What do you like to do when you’re here in Chicago? MA: I’ve been to the Bean, the museums, Millennium Park, which is a great place to be. I did a piece with the Sinfonietta for a show at the Shedd Aquarium, so I’ve been there quite a lot, and I love just watching up and down Michigan Avenue. Chicago has everything that a great city needs. I’m a huge fan. This interview has been condensed and edited.
