Garden briefs The Negaunee Foundation gift for science e Chicago Botanic Garden is hon- ored to receive a gift of $10 million from e Negaunee Foundation to name its science program. e new name, the Negaunee Institute for Plant Conservation Science and Action, re ects the Garden’s standing as one of the leaders in plant conservation science. is gift will be used for the following: • To pay for several critical scientist and sta positions that are now supported by short-term government funding. It also meets the challenge match with Northwestern University to support scholarships and other funding needs of our joint graduate program in plant biology and conservation. • To invest in new programming, such as a plant conservation synthesis cen- ter. Centers like this one bring scien- tists together for creative discovery on issues crucial to science and society. • To establish a rotating postdoctoral scientist position to enhance collabo- ration between the Garden and e Field Museum, and advance speci- men-based botanical research in the Chicago area. Learn more chicagobotanic.org/research Awards and honors • e Chicago Botanic Garden has been accredited by Botanic Gardens Conservation International as an Advanced Conservation Practitioner. is is the highest level of accredita- tion by BGCI. It recognizes excel- lence and international leadership in plant conservation, practice, and education. • Kayri Havens, Ph.D., Medard and Elizabeth Welch Senior Director, Ecology and Conservation, has been awarded the Liberty Hyde Bailey Award from the American Horticul- tural Society. e society’s highest award is given to an individual who has made signi cant lifetime contri- butions in horticultural elds. e Lenhardt Library, led by senior director Leora Siegel (above), was awarded the Ross Merrill Award for outstanding commitment to the preservation and care of collections by the American Institute for Conservation. e Garden received a $10 million gift to support plant conservation science. Dr. Kayri Havens (right) received a top honor from the American Horticultural Society.
