With your SLR camera’s flash, flashlights, the sun, and other light sources, create a 3D world showing the rhythm of nature. This intermedi- ate-level class will include an opportunity to use strobe lighting, light tables, and backdrops for the study of textures in composition. FPC fundamental course, fine art track Dianne Kittle, fine art photographer $399/$499 | Classroom 5, Learning Center 7 Fridays, September 27 – November 22, 12:30 – 3:30 p.m. (no classes November 8 & 15) Photographing Trees Both deciduous and evergreen trees are essential to the environment, and this class will provide instruction on how best to photograph each type. For evergreens, the emphasis will be on texture and pattern; for deciduous trees, capturing branches and the changing color of leaves as individual subjects in close-ups will be the focus. Digital SLR cameras with a medium- to wide-angle lens and macro- or close-focus- ing lens are required. Students should have a working knowledge of their camera settings and controls. Textures in Autumn Photography Field Trip Starved Rock State Park We will carpool to Starved Rock State Park to hike and photograph the varied textures of autumn. Collect images of nature and share your passion for photography with other adventurous souls. Bring a sack lunch, hiking boots, and your camera on an exploration of this scenic natural gem. This class is project oriented and will take your Photo- shop knowledge to the next step. You will get deeper into layers, layer masking, channels, and blend modes. Iris Allen, freelance photographer and instructor $299/$374 | Classroom 4, Learning Center 6 Wednesdays, October 2 – November 6, 9:30 a.m. – noon Portrait Photography Lighting Explore and develop fine art portraiture and lighting techniques. We will focus on how to use lighting to create dynamic portraits on location or in studio. Lighting and portrait photographs will be created in different styles. We will work with professional models. The work of historic and contemporary artists will serve as inspiration. Practice the techniques by doing weekly exercises based on class lessons. Finally, use design techniques to create your own professional portfolio worthy of exhibition. FPC fundamental course, nature and landscape track Paul Lucas, nature photographer and instructor $359/$449 | Classroom 4, Learning Center 6 Sundays, October 6 – November 10, 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. Beginning Digital Photography Learn the techniques and principles of pho- tography. Explore the basics, including image composition rules, how the camera works, proper exposure, and the functions of lens ap- erture and shutter speed. Some minimal photo processing will also be covered. The course requires a digital SLR camera. No previous experience is required. Photographing Intimate Landscapes Taking an intimate point of view—smaller than distant horizons, larger than macro—lets you bring patterns, contrasts, layers, abstraction, and new meaning into your images. In this intermediate-level class, use traditional and creative approaches to find beauty in small- er-scale scenes from nature and daily life. A digital SLR or mirrorless camera with manual controls for aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, and familiarity with basic camera functions are required. Culminating Project Studio Complete the culminating project for the master track in an open studio format. You will work toward creating a project that includes an artist statement, biography, journal notes, mind maps, a short essay on repeating motifs, subject research, a study of historical artists, and images. Also included will be group critique and discussion of submission possibilities, portfolio reviews, and exhibition opportunities. FPC master track requirement Tobin Fraley, photographer $399/$499 | Classroom 4, Learning Center 7 Tuesdays, October 15 – November 26, 9:30 a.m. – noon Night Photography: Painting with Light When the sun drops below the horizon, bring the Garden to life by photographing your subject with a beam of light. Moving a light source during long exposure creates a look that can only be obtained by using light as a brush. DSLR camera (no phones or tablets, please) and a sturdy tripod is required. A cable or remote shutter release is helpful but not required.
