The Chicago Botanic Garden’s teacher professional development programs feature best practices in STEM education (science, technology, engineering, and math) and support Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for grades preK – 12. Many courses incorporate reading, math, art, social studies, and engineering into the science lessons. CPDUs and graduate credits are available for most workshops. Visit chicagobotanic. org/teacherprograms for more details. _________________________ One-Day Workshops ENTICE: Engineering and Life Science Including engineering in the NGSS may seem challenging, but it is possible to add an engineering twist even in plant science and ecology through the study of biomimicry. Investigate the physical properties of plant parts and the structures that animals create. Discover simple tips for setting up engi- neering challenges. Targeted for teachers of grades 3 – 8, but all educators are welcome to register and adapt the materials for their students. CPDUs: 5.5 This workshop is part of ENTICE (Envi- ronment and Nature Training Institute for Conservation Education) Register through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources at enticeworkshops.com . Grade level: preK – 12 $11 | Learning Center Saturday, September 28 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Nature Detectives: Reading the Environment The natural world has a story to tell, once we learn to read the clues. Scientists use this information to tell stories about the environ- ment. Using cross-cutting concepts and signs in nature, learn how animal tracks and holes in trees tell us about interactions, and about the health of an ecosystem. The activities and investigations enable students to interpret what they find outdoors. CPDUs: 5.5 Grade level: K – 12 $72/$90 | Learning Center Saturday, October 19 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Stone Soup Science Combine children’s literature with recipes and kitchen experiments to foster wonder about the natural world. This class will fea- ture storybooks with cooking that is part of the plot. Follow recipes for different learners, use kitchen tools, explore the relationship between colorful foods and basic nutrition, and do some kitchen science. The workshop includes age-appropriate recipes (both edible and not) that you can take back to your classroom. CPDUs: 6 Grade level: PreK – 3 $72/$90 | Learning Center Saturday, November 16 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. STEM: Science & Engineering with Hydroponics Hydroponic growing systems provide an intriguing, real-world application of science and engineering practices. Examine systems and system models as you learn what is required to grow plants in water. Build a simple hydroponic planter to take back to the classroom using inexpensive, easy-to-get materials. We’ll provide tips for guiding stu- dents to design and test their own systems, as we address ecosystem interactions, natural cycles, and urban gardening. CPDUs: 6 Grade level: 4 – 12 $72/$90 | Learning Center Classroom Saturday, December 14 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Gardening Courses Windy City Harvest holds a variety of garden- ing workshops at the Arturo Velasquez Insti- tute in Chicago. These classes cover growing plants indoors and outside using sustainable techniques, and can improve your home and school gardening skills. See page 60 for gardening classes. Visit chicagobotanic.org/education/windy_ city_harvest for a complete list of topics and other information. Online Courses Introduction to Citizen Science Online: Friday, September 27 – Sunday October 27 Teaching Phenology and Climate Change Online: Friday, January 24 – Sunday, February 23 Coming this Winter STEAM 2.0 Saturday, January 25 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Weather Investigators Saturday, February 22 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Custom Teacher Workshops Garden educators can customize workshops for your needs. Workshops are perfect for teacher institute days, curriculum meetings, or other professional events. Activities are aligned with Next Generation Science Stan- dards (NGSS) and your curriculum, and will increase understanding of plants and nature, build a repertoire of teaching techniques, and enliven the classroom. Workshops may be held at your school or at the Garden. Choose from the following topics or suggest one of your own. Exploring Nature with Young Children Classroom Gardening Plant Basics Schoolyard Ecology Science and Literature Midwest Ecosystems Growing Plants in Martian Soil Custom workshops are a minimum of two hours long and cost $200/hour for each group of up to 20 teachers. Please call Teacher Programs at (847) 835- 8253 for more information. The Garden is a CPS Preferred Provider of teacher profes- sional development.
