Chicago Botanic Garden Winter 2019
chicagobotanic.org 9 The 2020 Orchid Show highlights the hues of orchids, intensified and featured in unexpected ways—picture a modern world of brilliant, living color. is is a di erent kind of Orchid Show. You’ll see orchids in engaging and ener- gizing ways. We’re using light, re ec- tion, and strips of colored lm to satu- rate the Regenstein Center galleries with color. A towering canopy of color will frame orchids in a kaleidoscope of light and brilliant hues—our represen- tation of an abstract forest. You’ll get a fresh take on di erent shades of or- chids, through oor-to-ceiling artistic installations and a chandelier lled with colorful blooms. Color can be essential to the survival of wild orchids, which must attract polli- nators in order to reproduce. Bee-polli- nated orchids, for instance, tend to be yellow or violet, but not red—bees can’t see red. And in a play on the word “brilliance,” the Show touches on the brilliant survival strategies of orchids. e Show will look di erent by day, in the winter sun, and in the evening, when lights enhance the colors.
