Urban Agriculture Short Courses in Urban Agriculture Windy City Harvest is the Garden’s urban agriculture department, headquartered at the Farm on Ogden in Chicago. The goal of the department is to connect people with plants through engagement in growing and processing edible crops using the lens of food, health, and jobs. Short courses are intended as a gateway into Windy City Harvest or as a supplement to WCH’s career pathway. Most classes take place at the Farm on Ogden in the North Lawndale community, 3555 Ogden Avenue in Chicago. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are now offering online classes as well as in-person classes. Please note whether your class will be held outside and in person or as an online course. Saturday Intensives Saturday Intensives are appropriate for all adults at various gardening levels, but will be most effective for individuals with previous gardening/farming experience. Classes all have a significant hands-on component and participants should be prepared to be outdoors in all weather. Each Saturday Intensive class costs $75, unless otherwise noted. COVID-19 update: The Chicago Botanic Garden is monitoring state and local health guidelines for room capacities, social distancing, hand- washing, and other measures to prevent the spread of disease. In the event we are required to close on-site programs, online versions of the courses will be offered whenever possible. Please refer to our website for updated information. Cold-Season Growing: September, October & November Online class Get growing all year round! This is a technical training course intended for aspiring growers interested in learning best-practice season- extension techniques. Stay at home while planning ahead for season extension in your garden or on your farm. Our experienced farm educator is well versed in online coursework and learning. You will finish the class with doc- uments to support your growing practice and a solid foundational knowledge for growing late into the season. Paul Krysik, Windy City Harvest coordinator Online Saturday, October 17, 10 a.m. – noon How to Build and Design a Washpack Station Building a great washpack station on your farm site can help you increase efficiency and reduce waste while you process the bounty of a harvest. Learn about the materials, design, and construction process for Windy City Harvest farm sites all over the city. Each year, we improve and refine our build strategy over multiple seasons so every site has a functional washpack that also meets food safety require- ments for urban agriculture. This three-day course is a comprehensive look at the design and build-out of a system, water quality, controlled-environment growing, daily operations, and growing techniques. Instruc- tion will include hands-on work and lectures.
