ENTICE: Illinois Prairies Designed for educators of grades K through 8, this workshop explores prairie ecology as well as the history of prairies in Illinois and how humans have affected prairies. Illinois-specific educational resources will be provided and suggestions will be given for using the prairie and prairie-related resources from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to help you meet NGSS. Learn how to create a stimulating nature station for year-round use no matter your budget. Take away ideas for enhancing your schoolyard to encourage more nature play and investigation. Through Zoom-delivered lessons and home investiga- tions, you will perform experiments with inexpensive, easy-to-make bottle terrariums as you examine interrelationships, adaptations, and cycles of matter. We will provide live plants and program materials by mail or pickup prior to the workshop. Through synchronous sessions and asynchronous work, investigate ways to help students make good observa- tions. Help students identify patterns in nature and disruptions to those patterns and use them to make sense of evidence. Explore patterns in the structure and function of plants and animals, adaptations, ecosystem interactions, and more. Keynote and NGSS expert is Northwestern Uni- versity’s Brian Reiser. He and other speakers will present ways to use storylines, NGSS three-dimensional learning, and natural phenomena to help students meet standards and develop better thinking skills. Virtual Field Trips Virtual field trips deliver Garden learning to your classroom through an online meeting platform of your choice. Each program includes a short video, a kit of materials, and a one-hour, online lesson with a Garden educator that engages students in an investigation of NGSS-related natural phenomena found at the Garden.
