Nature Preschool The Garden’s Nature Preschool will delight and engage your child in an adventure of discovery about the natural world and prepare them for a future of lifelong learning. Registration for the 2021–22 school year will open in early January. Visit chicagobotanic.org/naturepreschool, call (847) 835-8238, or attend an open house to learn more. Nature Preschool Open House Meet the teaching staff, explore the indoor and outdoor classroom spaces, and learn about daily activities. Each time slot will begin with an overview of preschool followed by an opportunity to ask questions and tour the spac- es. Preregistration is required for each person, including children, planning to attend an open house session. Walk-ins will not be admitted. Free, preregistration required | Classroom 11, Learning Center Saturday, November 7, 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon, or 1 p.m. Sunday, November 15, 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon, or 1 p.m. Books & Cooks: Online Does your child love to help out in the kitchen? Tune in online for stories, songs, and activities followed by a cooking activity. This one-hour caregiver-and-child program is designed for children ages 3 to 5. It is the perfect way to encourage children to eat their fruits and veggies and have fun, too! A list of ingredients and supplies you need to gather, along with a Zoom link, will be sent to you ahead of time, with suggested substitutions to accommodate allergies. $10/$12 per child | Online 1 – 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 29: Awesome Apples Tuesday, October 27: Pumpkin Party Tuesday, December 15: Winter Wands Weekend Family Classes: Online Explore cool things about plants in science, food, history, and culture and make a delicious meal or holiday treats. This 60-minute online program is for ages 4 to 10 with an adult, featuring a different theme each month. A list of ingredients and supplies you need to gather, along with a Zoom link, will be sent to you ahead of time, with suggested substitutions to accommodate allergies. For an additional fee, we can send special ingredients for Holiday Cookies and Loco for Cocoa. Please check the website for details. $10/$12 per child *optional $24 supply kit | Online All Weekend Family Classes are offered at both 11 a.m. – noon and 1 – 2 p.m. Creepy Cooking Celebrate Halloween cooking up your own scary treats with a little less sugar. We will make banana ghosts (yogurt-covered bananas) and pretzel spider webs using melted chocolate. Saturday, October 24, or Sunday, October 25 Pumpkin Spice It Up November is pumpkin spice season. Let’s start a slow-cooker soup for dinner on cold nights, make a pumpkin-flavored dessert to taste the sweeter side of squash, and learn to make a no-caffeine pumpkin-spiced drink to warm up our hands and tummies. Saturday, November 7, or Sunday, November 15 Holiday Cookies* Join your Garden friends for a new twist on this holiday favorite class. Participants will make, bake, and decorate their own cookies. This class will have a spice-sniffing component and participants may opt to purchase an ingredient package to be sent to you ahead of time. Sunday, December 6, or Saturday, December 19, or Sunday, December 20 Loco for Cocoa* Discover the sweet story of chocolate from bitter bean to delicious dessert. Participants taste different types of chocolate, practice dipping fruits and snacks into melted chocolate, and make chocolate ice cream for dessert. This class will have a chocolate-tasting component, and participants may opt to purchase an ingredient package to be sent to you ahead of time. Sunday, January 10, or Saturday, January 23 Smoothies Make your own smoothie for a healthy and refreshing snack. Learn to create a colorful, layered smoothie with two different flavors. Learn about the plant parts used and what to do with parts you might usually throw away. Sunday, February 7, or Saturday, February 20 Butter and French Toast Your next homemade breakfast won’t be the same after you learn how fun and easy it is to make your own butter! Whip up a stack of French toast with homemade butter to warm up on the weekend. Saturday, February 27, or Sunday, March 7 Pizza Party It’s a lunchtime pizza party! Learn how to roll out dough and spread toppings to customize a pizza using your favorite ingredients.
