The Poetics of Botanical Art Offered in collaboration with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago Using the rich resources of the Chicago Botanic Garden and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, explore traditional botanical illustra- tion techniques and materials with room for play and experimentation. Gouache (opaque watercolor) is the focal medium of these courses, with emphasis placed on representa- tions of outdoor color or light in the gardens. Develop plein air observational skills with a focus on botany as you identify plants and their parts, learn paint handling and pictorial composition, and reference historical exam- ples of the portrayal of nature, both real and imagined, from abstraction to impressionism and photo-realism. No prior experience with gouache paint is required. This course will meet at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago on Friday and at the Chica- go Botanic Garden on Saturday and Sunday. Luscious Roses in Colored Pencil Immerse yourself in the world of roses. Using colored pencils, wet and dry, study and draw plein air- style in the Chicago Botanic Garden’s glorious Krasberg Rose Garden and develop finished work in the studio. Experience with the Garden’s drawing and/or colored pencil courses is desirable. A supply list will be sent. Watercolor Garden Tour Explore four different gardens and capture the essence of what makes each garden unique. Get inspired by the kaleidoscope of summer colors and spectacular variety of landscapes and successfully translate your experience into your watercolor paintings. The School’s CEUs=14 hours ART elective Thomas Trausch, artist, TWSA master status $299/$374 | Plant Science Lab, Regenstein Center 4 Saturdays, July 11 – August 1, 1 – 4:30 p.m. English Watercolor Techniques Use live plant materials and build on tech- niques learned in Watercolor I. Emphasis is on realistic portrayal of botanical subjects and traditional methods of dry brush watercolor painting, with attention to detail and color accuracy. Demonstrations and individual instruction will be given. A supply list will be sent. Prerequisites: Botanical Drawing 1, Color Mixing, and Watercolor 1 ART requirement, traditional track Nancy Halliday, freelance artist and naturalist $279/$349 | Design Studio, Regenstein Center 6 Thursdays, July 16 – August 20, 6 – 9 p.m. Outdoor Sketching Composing quick studies in the field is an important skill. You will gain the experience to create these sketches, complete with notes on field conditions, colors, plant measurements, and textures, for a complete work-up in the studio. Folding chairs are provided. In case of inclement weather, the class will draw in the Greenhouses. Dress for the weather. A supply list will be sent.
