Chicago Philharmonic 2018-2019
THE CHICAGO PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY | FALL 2018 19 2018 2019 SEASON: CONCERT FOR PEACE outbursts in major triads. e orchestra, choir, and soloists joyfully proclaim the Gloria until a sudden stop is followed with an calm a cappella section for the vocal soloists, singing “Qui tollis peccata mundi” (“Who taketh away the sins of the world”). Credo , the confession of faith, is sung by the choir and tenor in a chanting style without orchestral accompaniment. Much like the Gloria, Kilar changes the texture and density of the music to match the text. At one point, he introduces female voices for the rst time in the Credo on the verse “Et incarnatus est ex Maria Virgine” (“was incarnate of the Virgin Mary”). Despite the austere introduction, the movement ends warmly, with the choir singing “Amen” to major chords. A er a lyrical Sanctus for soprano and orchestra, Missa pro pace culminates in an expressive Agnus Dei . Here the composer is most emphatically praying for peace – the intention of the entire Mass. e choir and orchestra begin the movement with three powerful, dissonant iterations of “Agnus dei” (“Lamb of God”); Sanctus returns to these dissonant chords repeatedly. A resolution is reached in Dona nobis pacem with beautiful, warm harmonies sung by a cappella choir, later joined by the orchestra and soloists to reach an exuberant conclusion.
