2018 2019 HEROES & LEGENDS 8 2018-2019 SEASON | THE CHICAGO PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY Defying Destiny Sunday, April 7 2019, 3:00pm Pick-Staiger Hall, Evanston Scott Speck Conductor Robert Everson Timpani Tchaikovsky Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture Daugherty Raise the Roof Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade with David Perry, violin solo Through triumph and tragedy, journey with us as we follow great heroes in defiance of their fate. Rimsky-Korsakov‘s suite honors the story-telling heroine of Middle Eastern folk tale Arabian Nights as she spins tales over 1001 nights to protect her people. Then journey to Verona as Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet tells the story of star-crossed lovers who rebel against their warring families with heartbreaking results. Finally, witness timpanist Robert Everson take on Daugherty’s “joyous romp” ( South Florida Classical Review ) that defies tradition with unorthodox performance techniques. Strongmen and aerialists perform superhuman feats onstage alongside the orchestra, perfectly choreographed to classic cinematic scores, in this spectacular family-friendly season finale.
