A er years of planning and fundraising, in March 1991 the new society held its rst concert as “Symphony II” under the leadership of Larry Rachle , who would go on to serve as Orchestra Director for the next 23 years. In late 2004, the orchestra changed its name to Chicago Philharmonic. In 2012, the organization, led by its new Board Chairman Paul R Judy, began a transition to its formal and unique structure as a musician-governed society supported by an active membership of mu- sicians and non-musicians. Continuing a long-time culture of musi- cian leadership and participation, the Society described itself then, and now, as a “community of musicians”. e phrase was coined by Pierre Boulez as the ideal form for a major musical arts organization, and endorsed by prominent leaders and thinkers such as Robert Shaw, Gunther Schuller, Ernest Fleischmann and Bruce Coppock. On July 2, 2012, the Society adopted the formal name “ e Chicago Philharmonic Society” to re ect the organization’s structure, increas- ingly diverse musical o erings, and varying ensemble sizes from symphonic to chamber. e Chicago Philharmonic has consistently won praise from music critics and audiences alike.
