Polish pianist Łukasz Krupi ń ski joins Chi Phil for the Piano Concerto in A Minor by Ignacy Jan Paderewski – pianist, composer, politician, statesman, and spokesman for Polish independence. Panufnik’s Tragic Overture, which echoes the wartime atmosphere in which it was composed, was dedicated to the composer’s own personal hero, his brother, who perished in the Warsaw Uprising. Also featured: Chopin’s final composition for orchestra and Szymanowski’s expressive, romantic overture which debuted at the first historic “Young Poland in Music” concert in 1906. Pre-concert music will be performed by the Lira Ensemble singers. Legendary Polish composer Wojciech Kilar’s work has been enjoyed by popular audiences – he composed scores for over 130 films, including The Pianist and Bram Stoker’s Dracula – but symphonic music was his first love. Composed for the centennial celebration of the National Philharmonic in Warsaw in 2001, Kilar’s Mass for Peace was also performed at the Vatican for Pope John Paul II in the same year. Join us at the magnificent St. Hyacinth Basilica for Kilar’s Mass sung in a liturgical setting.
