20 FALL 2019 | THE CHICAGO PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY Gene Collerd, clarinet, holds B.A. and M.M. music degrees from Yale University. He is Professor of Music at the University of Illinois at Chicago where he was active as a conductor and now teaches clarinet, chamber music, and theory. He is a musician member of the Chicago Philharmonic, plays Principal Clarinet with the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, and is Assistant Principal Clarinet with the Grant Park Symphony. A founding member of the Chicago Wind Quintet, he has been a guest with such notable ensembles as Music of the Baroque, Chicago Chamber Musicians, Rembrandt Chamber Players, the Lyric Opera Orchestra, and the Chicago and Milwaukee Symphony Orchestras. Jennifer Cappelli, violin, is a graduate of Indiana University where she earned both her Bachelor and Master of Music in Violin Performance. Ms. Cappelli spent six years with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra before returning to her native Chicago to perform as a member of the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra’s rst violin section for 14 years. She has been a substitute player with the Chicago and Milwaukee Symphony Orchestras, and has acted as Concertmaster for the Lakeshore Symphony Orchestra and Assistant Concertmaster of the Chicago Philharmonic, as well as performing with Music of the Baroque and Fulcrum Point New Music Project. She is a winner of the Society of AmericanMusicians, St. Paul Federal and Artist Presentation Society competitions. Pauli Ewing, violin, is a member of the Chicago Philharmonic and is a member of the 1st violins in the Lyric Opera Orchestra. A native of Tulsa, OK, Ms. Ewing began piano, violin, solfege and music theory lessons at a young age. She was the youngest ever to win the solo division of the Merle and Frank Buttram String Awards at 13. Solo performances began with the Tulsa Philharmonic, Oklahoma City Symphony, Nashville Chamber Ensemble and the Storioni Ensemble. Ms. Ewing was 1st violin/leader of the Midsummer Chamber Music Festival in Door County for 3 years, concertmaster/solo violin of Chamber Opera Chicago, 3 years, and 1st violin in the Colorado Music Festival. She has also played with the Aspen Music Festival, Peninsula Music Festival, Music of the Baroque and Grant Park Music Festival. Claudia Lasare -Mirono , viola, graduated with a Bachelor of Music from the University of Denver and a Master of Music and a Certi cate in Performance from Northwestern University before becoming principal violist of the Cape Town Symphony in South Africa. She has performed chamber music with members of the Chicago Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera, Paci ca String Quartet, Eighth Blackbird, PINOTAGE and more. Currently she performs as a musician member of the Chicago Philharmonic, and with Music of the Baroque, Fulcrum Point New Music Ensemble, and Peninsula Music Festival. She is the Adjunct Professor of Viola at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, on the faculty at the University of Illinois-Chicago, and is a member of the Artist Chamber Music Faculty at the Music Institute of Chicago Academy. Paula Kosower, cello, is an active performer and teacher currently residing in Evanston. She has performed chamber music this season with the Chicago Philharmonic, and at Ravinia, the Pianoforte Foundation, Fourth Presbyterian Church, and the Chicago Cultural Center. She frequently subs with the Chicago Symphony, theMilwaukee Symphony and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Ms. Kosower is a faculty member at North Park University, Northwestern University and the University of Illinois-Chicago. She also teaches pedagogy courses at Northwestern and DePaul, and coaches chamber music for the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra program. Dvořák’s work, originally written for violin and piano, reminds us of his New World symphony. Written towards the end of his sojourn in the United States and dedicated to his children, its fresh and joyful melodies are punctuated by a hint of nostalgia and longing for home. Written for the clarinet virtuoso Heinrich Baermann, the Clarinet Quintet from Weber is a beloved staple for clarinet quintet. e challenging technical clarinet passages, complimented by string quartet, showcase gorgeous blended textures and nish with a light and jubilant nale.
