Forest Preserves of Cook County 2019 Spring Brochure

North Zone Explore what’s wild and wonderful. Each spring millions of colorful songbirds, waterfowl, hawks, owls and other birds fly through Chicago, making spring an excellent time to go birding. The open land and natural habitat of places like Harms Woods and LaBagh Woods are important stopover sites for migratory birds. Some species like Spring in the Preserves: Migrating Birds thrushes and warblers are traveling from Central andSouth America, so a place to rest and refuel is critical. More than 200 species of birds have been identified at LaBaghWoods. See if you can spot a green-back heron this spring, or a black-throated green warbler on its seasonal trip to Canadian forests. Look through this guide for other wildlife and plants that can also be found in the North Zone this spring. Photo: Green Heron by Mark Kasick 18
