Sauk Trail Woods Strolling through this seemingly endless preserve in south suburban Cook County, visitors can truly feel like they’ve disappeared into nature without having to travel to Colorado or California—or even downstate Illinois. With stunning bluffs, the placid century-old Sauk Trail Lake, and a river running through it, this moist habitat sits adjacent to a marsh as well as Thorn Creek. Natural hallmarks encompass ancient oaks and mountain mint, gray-headed coneflower and Rudbeckia, and a flurry of migratory flyers including osprey, yellow warblers and Acadian flycatchers.
