Caldwell Woods/ Bunker Hill These adjoining sites on the northwest side of Chicago contain parts of the 20-mile North Branch Trail system for bicyclists, hikers and dog-walkers. Visitors can traverse flatwoods, floodplain forests, oak woodlands and open savannas. At Bunker Hill, sightseers can take in impressive views over river bluffs, observe a range of animal life, or sit peacefully amongst wildflowers and grasses. At Caldwell, a newly renovated wellness and welcome center will host indoor recreation, cultural arts and wellness-related classes while serving as a starting point for hiking and bird watching. Miller MeadowWoods Located in western suburban Forest Park, this preserve features an extensive paved trail system and expansive views of a wide-ranging palette of natural features. The most frequent bird sightings at Miller Meadow Woods in 2022, as reported to ebird.org , have included American goldfinches, common grackles, warbling vireos, ruby-crowned kinglets, and—by far most of all—sandhill cranes.
