49 PLAY ATTENTION MILITARY FAMILIES Play Attention invites military and veteran families with young children to explore the exhibits while the Museum is closed to the general public, providing an opportunity for calm, collaborative play in a safe, accessible environment that children and their military or veteran caregivers are able to enjoy alongside other military/veteran families. Additionally, by partnering with veterans’ organizations, the Museum is able to reach more families and provide an opportunity for those organizations to promote their outreach programs and services. Invisible wounds of war, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI), afflict many veterans and active-duty soldiers, and evidence indicates that symptoms of PTSD can be transferred to family members, including to children. Play Attention is partially underwritten by Allstate. EVERYONE AT PLAY FAMILIES WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Kohl Children’s Museum was specifically designed to be inclusive of all children and adults regardless of ability, and to encourage linguistic, cognitive, motor, and social skills for children ages birth through 8. The Museum works collaboratively with community organizations to invite families with children with special needs to the Museum to explore the exhibits while closed to the general public. These events on specified Sunday mornings provide opportunities for calm, creative, and collaborative play.
